We are passionate about helping our Farmers and Young Farmers be ahead of the game through proactive education and up-skilling. With qualified trainers we are able to offer a range of Farmskills workshops, Milksure training and bespoke farm training where required.

 

DIY AI COURSE

Held at: Yan Farm Health, Bleaze Farm, Old Hutton, LA8 0LU. Light refreshments will be provided.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the legislation and the license rules and regulations.

  • Identify the key parts of the reproductive anatomy of the cow.

  • Understand the oestrous cycle and heat detection.

  • Understand the principles of good flask and straw storage and management.

  • Explain how to cleanly and safely carry out AI.

  • Show how to thaw and handle semen correctly.

  • Carry out the practical task of insemination

MASTERING MEDICINES

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the following classes of medicine, what they do and when to use them:

    • Vaccines

    • Antibiotics

    • Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID)

    • Anthelmintics

  • Safe and effective administration of medicines.

  • Comply with medicines legislation and farm assurance requirements.

FOOT TRIMMING

Held at: Yan Farm Health, Bleaze Farm, Old Hutton, LA8 0LU. Light refreshments will be provided.

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise normal bovine locomotion and relate this to the AHDB Dairy mobility score.

  • Recognise lameness and grade severity.

  • Understand the basic anatomy of the bovine foot.

  • Know how to restrain a cow and pick up their feet using a crush.

  • Understand the five key steps of the Dutch Method and know how to apply these to prevent lameness conditions.

  • Trim feet effectively.

  • Recognise the main diseases leading to lameness.

  • Know when and how to apply blocks and medical treatment and when to seek specialist veterinary advice.

MILKSURE

Held at: Yan Farm Health, Bleaze Farm, Old Hutton, LA8 0LU. Light refreshments will be provided

Learning outcomes:

An industry course designed and overseen by Dairy UK and BCVA. The course is designed to improve the professionalism around medicine use on dairy farms and drives higher standards. This is to safeguard human health and to demonstrate a responsible approach to help reduce antibiotic resistance. These are important to promote the image of dairy farming and to protect consumer confidence in dairy products.
